I believe my morning mood can influence how the rest of my day unfolds.
If I start my day feeling accomplished, that sense of satisfaction motivates me to get moving. After I graduated from nursing school, I didn't make much effort to learn beyond what was necessary to be a good nurse. For a while, my worldview felt narrow, and I noticed that a limited worldview made it harder to connect with and understand others.
While professional research is essential, especially in the constantly evolving field of medicine and evidence-based practice, it's often less engaging and more difficult than a quick lesson. I needed a way to focus on personal growth rather than professional development.
I recently started using the Nibble app to fill that gap. It's a different experience from other apps, as it's a quick mental check-in that helps me reflect on that day's lessons while doing simple tasks like brushing my teeth or preparing breakfast.
By choosing a microlearning app over mindlessly scrolling through social media,
"I've found a way to start my day with a sense of curiosity."
It's about the learning habit for busy professionals that sets a positive tone before I head into a shift.

Testing my alertness: Why mid-lesson quizzes beat mindless scrolling
What specifically helps wake up my brain is the format. During most lessons, there's a quiz midway that helps reinforce what you've just learned. I use these checkpoints to see if I'm fully alert and retaining information.
I've found that if I need to restart a lesson more than once, I probably need more sleep. If I mindlessly scroll through social media instead, I miss the chance to check in on my own mental state.
Nibble provides a level of engagement that professional research lacks. While I use Google Scholar and the National Library of Medicine for my career, Nibble encourages me to focus on growth outside of work.
My schedule is a bit off since I recently switched to the night shift. I used to do lessons around 6:00 AM each morning, but now I do them at 4:00 PM, or even 11:00 PM on my days off. No matter the time, the quizzes act as a gauge for my mental state.
Breaking out of the medical bubble: History, art, and personal finance
It's important to learn beyond what you need for your career. Gaining a broader understanding of the world through history, art, and science enhances creativity, critical thinking, and cognitive health.

Over the past few weeks, I've been working through the personal finance section. I never knew much about investing or how important it is to start saving for retirement early.
"These lessons motivated me to do more research, and now I am one step closer to achieving my financial goals."
Expanding into these topics feels like an opportunity for cultural and intellectual growth that makes me feel more connected to others. It's a way to ensure my identity isn't tied solely to clinical knowledge, but to a broadened worldview that includes art and science.
The night shift strategy: Staying consistent when fatigue hits
Working a night shift can be tough. There have been times when I've slept past 24 hours and had to restart my streak. Some days, I wake up after a difficult shift feeling completely unmotivated. On those days, I like to revisit topics I found particularly fascinating. My favorite section to revisit is literature. I'm a fan of Oscar Wilde, so having a whole unit about him brings me so much joy.
What keeps the daily learning streak going even when I'm exhausted is knowing that there's always something to look forward to. Instead of hitting snooze or just scrolling, I reach for a topic that satisfies me. It strengthens the idea that even when you're tired, you can still learn.
For any fellow nurse who's always exhausted, start with the section that sounds the most interesting to you. That's what will reinforce the habit and remind you that there's always something to look forward to and learn from.
Fitting these lessons into my life has made my "mornings" — whenever they happen — something to look forward to. Nibble helped me maintain a well-rounded learning process that fits into a demanding healthcare schedule.

Editor's note: A daily Nibble for the busiest professionals!
Healthcare professionals often find that their world narrows down to clinical data and patient care. This case study demonstrates how the Nibble app serves as a low-friction tool for personal growth for healthcare workers, allowing them to reclaim their curiosity in the small gaps of a demanding day.
With Nibble, you can:
- Check your mental readiness: Use mid-lesson quizzes to gauge your alertness and retention.
- Broaden your worldview: Access sections on personal finance, literature, history, and science to grow beyond your professional field.
- Overcome fatigue: Stay consistent with a streak system and reread fascinating topics when your energy is low.
- Reclaim your morning: Start your day with a sense of accomplishment while doing simple tasks like making breakfast.
