Why do you need this math worksheet?
Learning about area and perimeter typically begins around 4th grade, 5th grade, and 6th grade. They're calculating the perimeter of a rectangle, figuring out the area of a triangle, working with quadrilaterals, and trying to remember which formula applies where. This worksheet shows each formula with worked examples.
Key benefits:
Clear formulas for triangles, squares, rectangles, and trapezoids.
Step-by-step examples showing how calculations work.
Visual shape references make formulas easier to remember.
You can download and print this freebie as many times as you need.
Multiple shapes, from simple squares to parallelograms and trapezoids.
Handles fractions and decimals, plus whole numbers.
How to use this area and perimeter worksheet effectively
Daily warm-up practice: Print the worksheet and work through one or two problems before regular study time. Five minutes every day works better than studying for an hour once a week.
Check your understanding: After finishing, use the Nibble app's mini-quizzes to see what stuck. The app tells you which concepts you've got down and which ones you're still getting confused on.
Rotate between shapes: Don't just practice one problem type over and over. Calculate the area of a square today, find the length of a rectangle tomorrow, then work on the perimeter of a square next. Rotating keeps you engaged.
What is inside the area and perimeter worksheet printable
This area and perimeter worksheet shows four shapes with their formulas and example calculations:
Triangle Section: Right triangle showing perimeter by adding all three sides (P = a + b + c). Example shows P = 2 + 4 + 6 = 12 cm. The area of right triangles uses A = 1÷2 (bh), where height equals the side length: example A = 1÷2 (3 × 4) = 6 cm² using square units. While this example shows a right triangle, the same formula works for an equilateral triangle when you know the height.
Square Problems: Shows perimeter formula P = 4a for adding all four equal sides. Example: P = 4 × 6 = 24 cm. The area of a square is A = a², with example A = 6² = 36 cm². You see how changing one side length affects both measurements.
Rectangle Exercises: Covers the perimeter of rectangles using P = 2a + 2b. Example shows P = 4 + 8 = 12 cm. The area of a rectangle is A = a × b, with example A = 2 × 4 = 8 cm². Shows different rectangles and how their measurements change.
Trapezoid Challenges: Shows the trapezoid perimeter formula P = a + b + c + d, with example P = 2 + 3 + 2 + 2 = 9 cm. Area formula A = (a + b) ÷ 2 × h, with example A = (2 + 3) ÷ 2 × 1.8 = 4.5 cm². Uses metric units and demonstrates calculations with decimals.
Each shape includes a clear diagram with labeled sides, the formula for both area and perimeter, and a worked example showing how to plug numbers into the formulas. The examples serve as your answer key — check whether your process matches the steps shown.
Step-by-step usage guide
Step 1: Leave your email to get your free math worksheets as a PDF file.
Step 2: Print the worksheet on regular paper. Print several copies for ongoing practice, or laminate one and use dry-erase markers.
Step 3: Work through calculating both area and perimeter for each shape. Start with the square, since it's the simplest, then move on to rectangles, triangles, and finally the trapezoid.
Step 4: Compare your work to the examples on the worksheet. Check whether your process matches the steps shown, not just whether your final answer is correct.

FAQs about the area and perimeter worksheet
How do you find area and perimeter?
Area is the space inside a shape. For rectangles, multiply length × width. For squares, multiply side × side. Perimeter is the distance around the outside — just add all the sides together. A rectangle with sides 3 cm and 5 cm has a perimeter of 16 cm (3 + 5 + 3 + 5) and an area of 15 cm² (3 × 5).
What is perimeter?
Perimeter is the total distance around a shape's outside edge. Add up all the side lengths. A square with 4 cm sides has a 16 cm perimeter: 4 + 4 + 4 + 4. It's basically the length of fence needed to go completely around something. Perimeter always uses regular length units, such as centimeters or meters, not squared units.
How to find perimeters?
Add all the sides together. Squares with equal sides — multiply one side by four (4 × 6 = 24 cm). Rectangles — add the two different sides, then double that. Triangles and trapezoids — measure each side and add them up. Each shape has its own formula, but they all come down to adding the outside edges.
